TMI has just learned that long-time travel retail veteran Solveig Atterberry passed away on Aug. 25, after a 4-year battle with breast cancer. The Copenhagen native moved to North America at age 19, and began working for some of the top fragrance brands before working with Duty Free companies across the Northern border throughout the 1980s and 1990s. She lived in Washington State and is survived by her husband, Jones Atterberry, along with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. TMI adds its condolences to those of the industry on her passing.
This issue of TMI is all about the Numbers. IATA reports robust air passenger traffic for July; the Caribbean Tourism Organization says that visitor arrivals to that region in the first half of the year have kept pace with the world average; and the Canadian Border Services Agency records airport duty free sales up strongly by 20%, although land border sales are down slightly year to date. In more Numbers news, U.S. outbound travel surged by 10% in April, the last month reported by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Travel and Tourism Office. Details on where they are traveling are on page 2.
Supply Side. The 9th annual Bacardi Cruise Competition Bartender of the Year will be named on Friday night in Miami Beach. TMI will be on hand to participate in the event, and will present a full report in the next issue.
