As we go to press with today’s issue the Dow industrial average has surged to a record high above 15,000 and the US jobless rate fell to 7.5% – its lowest level since December 2008. European markets also delivered positive results as the week ended – perhaps heralding better times to come?

IATA reports that improving economies resulted in continued strength for international air traffic in March. In somewhat related news, the US Congress and President Obama approved a short-term reprieve for the government mandated furloughs of air traffic controllers resulting from the “sequestration,” even as the President criticized the plan for delaying a real solution. Page 1.

 

DFS Group is also in the headlines. Its excellence performance in the first quarter propelled organic earnings of parent company LVMH up by 7%. In-store, the group has launched a far-reaching marketing campaign called Passage to Paradise that creates an inspired retail environment that invites customers on an exotic journey into the world of distinctive luxuries. Supporting the marketing effort, DFS today unveiled its own series of Passport to Paradise guidebooks for Hong Kong, Hawaii and Singapore. Full stories on page 4.

 

Tobacco giant JT International has introduced a number of initiatives in the Americas duty free market, including a new category management program in partnership with International Shoppes in North America, and the rollout of its Centenary Celebration for its Camel brand in Latin America. Community spirits were running high in the region last week. Essence Corp., Shiseido and BPI participated in the annual Mercedez Benz Corporate Run for charity in Miami, and the 7th annual Patrón Spirits Charity Golf Tournament took place in Coral Springs, where Patrón International President and COO John McDonnell announced that the effort has now raised one million dollars for various charities.
