It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Samuel Kauffmann. Always the ultimate gentleman, Samuel was a long-time Brasif executive and a co-founder behind South American Duty Free Association ASUTIL, as well as a friend and mentor to many. Samuel passed away last Friday, May 18, at the age of 80. See more on page 1.

Mexico welcomed a record number of international tourists in the first quarter of this year, although spend per passenger dipped a little from the same period last year. Page 2.

CUBA/CRUISE

 

Turkey-based Global Ports Holding Plc, the world’s largest independent cruise port operator, this week signed a 15-year agreement to operate the cruise port in Havana, where the market is booming. Cruise ship passenger arrivals rose 156% in 2017 over 2016, and are forecast to surpass 500,000 this year, up from nearly 330,000 last year. Full details on page 3.

Cognac company Bache-Gabrielsenhas has become the third brand to join the Family Brands Alliance created last year, joining founding members Behn DANZKA and Pallini Limoncello as a way for smaller companies to optimize logistics, marketing and service in a changing travel retail world. Page 4.
