Today’s issue of Travel Markets Insider begins with a heavy emphasis on cruise-related news–even as our colleagues in Europe are meeting at an industry-wide conference examining the topic, organized by DFNI.

Since we are lucky enough to be located in the heart of the birthplace of the cruise industry, cruising is a channel TMI has long championed as a critical opportunity for travel retail. In our two main stories, leading travel retailers Dufry and LVMH-owned Starboard Cruise Services announce important new cruise contracts.

Dufry, with new agreements with Holland America, Carnival and NCL, has added 10 ships to its travel retail portfolio, increasing the total from 17 to 27 ships.

Starboard – the leading company in cruise retail – runs the programs on the newest and largest ships in the global fleet, and dominates the Asian market, which is reflected in its win of DFNI’s Asia Pacific Cruise/Ferry Retailer of the Year award last month, an accolade it has won for four consecutive years. See both stories on pages 1-3. Starboard also announces a multi-year deal with Costa Cruises.

Congratulations also to Heinemann America’s CEO Nadine Heubel, who was named one of the top 10 women business leaders in Florida by The Commonwealth Institute. Heinemann, under Heubel, this year began retail operations on three Carnival cruise ships.

In more cruise news, Carnival Corp. has entered into an agreement to acquire port, railroad and retail operations in Alaska, a key destination on the seasonal cruise circuit. Page 3.
