Five years after the original legislation was passed by the Brazilian Parliament, the first Brazilian border store operated by a major operator has officially opened.
Global travel retailer Dufry inaugurated an 850 sqm retail shop in the border city of Uruguaiana, on August 22, perhaps ushering in a new era of opportunity for the travel retail business in the Southern Cone. See more details on page 1.
Argentina is also in the news this week. In a milestone event for Iguazu, Argentine President Mauricio Macri on Friday “christened” the first intercontinental flight from Puerto Iguazu International Airport, as Air Europa officially inaugurated flights from Iguazu to Madrid, Spain. In more news from Iguazu, Argentine duty-paid travel retailer ShopGallery this week opened a new 70 sqm Gate 7/24 Travel Market convenience store in Iguazu International Airport, which is currently in the midst of a major renovation project. The operator also opened a new 250sqm ShopGallery store in Iguazu airport at the beginning of August. Story on page 3.

Airports Council International (ACI) World reports that global passenger traffic moderated in the first half of 2019 while the air freight industry continued to experience downturn. The global passenger market grew by +3.6% year-to-date, almost one percentage point below its 12-month rolling average. Growth was largely driven by the strength in international travel.
