UPDATE: JAMAICA

Estimates of the damage from Hurricane Melissa, a brutal Category 5 storm that battered Jamaica and other nearby islands in the Caribbean last week, continue to rise. Jamaica Prime Minister Andrew Holness says Hurricane Melissa caused damage equivalent to nearly one-third of GDP.

More than 180 shelters remain open, with 2,487 people still living in them more than a week after the storm made landfall. As of yesterday, Nov. 6th, some 27 communities are still cut off due to landslides and flooding. The death toll stands at 75 — at least 32 people in Jamaica died and another 43 in nearby Haiti, where 13 others remain missing.

Despite the damage, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett is targeting Dec. 15th to have the island’s critical tourism industry be fully operational. TMI details the relief efforts underway, and how international communities are assisting, on page 1.
