Travel Blue is calling on the global travel retail industry (GTR) to reset its core category strategy, as a new generation of travelers reshapes purchasing behavior across airports worldwide.
“Travel Essentials is the category that will drive the next era of airport retail growth and should now be recognized as one of the most important,” says Travel Blue global commercial director, Alan Brennan. “Changing traveler behavior is creating a new opportunity to increase footfall, conversion and basket value and the time to act on it is now.”
With Gen Z forecast to account for 66% of GTR shoppers by 2028, the traditional reliance on heritage luxury categories is being challenged. They place higher value on relevance, convenience, functionality and immediate self-gratification than on aspiration alone, says Travel Blue.
Today’s travelers arrive at the airport connected, experience-focused and ready to shop and while value remains important, they increasingly prioritize products that solve immediate travel needs, enhance comfort or keep them connected throughout their journey.
Travel Blue partnered with leading GTR research agency m1nd-set, and the research identified five key purchase drivers for travel essentials: last-minute travel necessities; health & wellness; self-treat and technology upgrades; value through quality, design and functionality; peace of mind through trusted, certified products.
“The opportunity is no longer just about attracting shoppers into the store but offering categories that resonate with all travelers from the moment they enter the terminal,” says Brennan.
Unlike destination-led aspirational categories, Travel Essentials speaks to virtually every passenger regardless of age, nationality or journey purpose, says the company. From travel pillows and eye masks to certified travel adaptors, charging solutions, backpacks and luggage accessories, the category addresses practical travel needs that results in immediate purchase.
Travel Blue also reveals that approximately 75% of Travel Essentials sales are self-purchases made on impulse and that Travel Essentials shoppers spend more across other categories, including skincare, spirits and confectionery. A well-placed travel essentials fixture at the front of the store, supported by cross-category displays, drives unplanned purchases, builds bigger baskets and converts more shoppers into buyers.
“An insight-led, consumer focused category strategy is critical to unlocking the next phase of growth in an increasingly competitive travel environment. Travel Essentials is no longer a supporting player but has the potential to become the starting point of the customer journey,” says Brennan.
